The
best prevention is education and early detection …
Piedmont Breast Center recommends that you strongly encourage
and support the women in your life to:
- Complete
a monthly breast self examination beginning by age 20
- Schedule
an appointment for a clinical breast examination at least every
3 years beginning at age 20 and annually after age 40
- Don’t
forget your annual screening mammography begins at age 40
NOTE: women
under age 40 with either a family history of breast cancer or other
concerns about their personal risk should consult a healthcare provider
about risk assessment and when to begin mammography.
When should I do a breast self-examination
(BSE)?
The best time to do BSE is the same time each month; for menstruating
women, it should be performed after the menstrual period has ended
and when the breasts are less tender. For post-menopausal women,
it should be performed the same time each month.
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a type of cancer where cells in the breast tissue
divide and grow without the usual controls on cell death and cell
division.
What are the signs of breast cancer?
Breast cancer signs can vary from woman to woman. In certain cases,
some women never observe any signs. However, be aware of breast
changes including:
• A lump, hard knot or thickening
• Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening
• Change in breast size or shape
• Dimpling or puckering of the skin
• Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
• Pulling in of your nipple or other parts
• Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
• New pain in one spot
If you experience any of these symptoms, you should see a doctor
right away.
Though most growths found in the breast are not cancerous, some
are.
