A Look at Breast Feeding and Nursing Bras

Since the dawn of time mothers have been breast feeding their young and it was only in the mid to late 20th century when breast feeding was in decline. Several pharmaceutical companies have been trying to manufacture and alternative to breast milk since the late 19th century and by the early 1970′s over 75% of American infants were fed on artificial infant formulas rather than natural breast milk. This was in part due to campaigns led by pharmaceutical companies promoting their infant formulas in hospitals and nurseries, but also in part due to the growing belief that breast feeding was somehow old hat, out of fashion or unsightly.

Common sense thankfully prevailed and since the late 1970′s, breast feeding began to have its resurgence. With greater knowledge surrounding health issues of both natural and artificial infant feeding, and stricter controls on advertising, infant formulas are no longer permitted to be promoted as ‘a healthy alternative’ to breast milk, which is obviously by far the best option for rearing our young. With the resurgence of breast feeding has followed vastly improved designs for nursing bras. A nursing bra is a brassier design specifically for mother who are breast feeding.  This is not to be confused with a maternity bra which is designed to be worn during pregnancy to provide comfort and support as ones breasts enlarge.

Breast Feeding Your Baby – Pros and Cons

The choice to breast feed or use formula is a personal one.  There is no truly right or wrong answer.  If you’re having a debate on what to do, consider the following points:

Breast milk is generally healthier than baby formula.  Sure, baby formula manufacturers have spent a lot of time researching what nutrients a baby needs.  Formulas provide nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, so growing babies stay healthy and happy.  However, breast feeding provides some things that formula simply cannot, such as the following:

1. Antibodies – Your immune system has had many years of exposure to viruses and bacteria.  As a result, you have a store of antibodies that help you stay healthy and prevent infection.  Your baby doesn’t have this protection.  However, you can pass your antibodies to your infant via breast feeding, thus protecting them until they can make antibodies of their own.  Baby formula cannot do this.  There are no manufactured antibodies that can be mixed in to the formula prior to its purchase at a store.
