Mammograms
A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. This is the best screening
tool widely available to detect breast cancer at its earliest, most
treatable stages.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are having a mammogram at Piedmont
Breast Center and
have had a previous mammogram at another facility, it important that
you bring your films with you so that the radiologist can compare
results. This will help prevent unnecessary delays in receiving your
results.

More than 1.6 million
breast biopsies are performed each year in the U.S., making it one
of the most common medical procedures for women. Most women have
open surgical biopsies, which can lead to pain, scarring and several
hours at the hospital. Now, doctors at Piedmont Breast Center
are performing a newer, gentler biopsy with the Mammotome® Breast
Biopsy System, a minimally invasive breast biopsy device that helps
doctors accurately diagnose breast abnormalities without a trip
to the operating room and with no stitches.
In the procedure, a woman
sits up comfortably or lies on her back, while a doctor inserts
a special Mammotome® probe through a tiny incision in the breast.
Using ultrasound or x-ray-imaging, the doctor can accurately pinpoint
suspicious tissue and gently vacuum, cut and remove it for further
examination. The incision is so small no stitches are required and
a woman can return to normal activity immediately following the
procedure, with only a small adhesive bandage to cover the incision
site.
